Colour and Image Grading
Grading is achieved primarily in Combustion. Generally, the work of the colourist is to smooth the feel of the film, eliminate technical variations and imperfections, and create the look you wish to achieve.
We can grade footage by modifying the picture; for instance, by adjusting brightness and contrast levels. Other techniques include rebalancing, saturating and de-saturating colour, softening, and adding filmic effects such as grain and flare.
The process can often be overlooked, but comparing video before and after it has been professionally graded quickly allows us to appreciate the spectacular difference it can make. Often, video of variable quality (for instance, historical library footage) can be given a professional 'filmic' look, and be considerably enhanced.
